    naturally occurring substance in plant foods that may help prevent/treat chronic diseases.
  13. pathogen
    a microorganism that causes disease
  14. resting metabolic rate
    the energy required to maintain vital body functions, including respiration, heart rate, body temp, blood pressure, while the body is at rest.
  15. endocrine system
    sys of glands/tissues/cells that secrete hormones into the bloodstream to influence metabolism and other body processes.
  16. cortisol
    a sterorid hormone secreted by teh cortex of the adrenal gland
