    • Antihistamine
    • Anticholinergic
  4. What is the mechanism of action for Benadryl?
    • Antihistamine
    •      Blocks H1 histamine receptors in CNS, blood vessels, respiratory and GI tracts
    •           Drowsiness
    •           Decreased capillary permeability      
    •           Decreased respiratory mucouse production
    •           Decreased stomach motility / nausea
    •           Vasoconstriction
    • Anticholinergic
    •      Decreased CNS
    •      Decreases re-uptake of dopamine in CNS
    •           Reverses extrapyrimidal reactions
  5. What are the indications and field use for Benadryl?
    Allergic reaction

    • Anaphylaxis
    •      Why - Blocks H1 histamine receptors decreasing capillary permeability & itching

    • Extrapyrimidal reactions
    •      Why - Anticholinergic in CNS decreasing activity and re-uptake of dopamine
  6. Dosage for Benadryl?
    Doseage is via slow IV push or IM

    Adult

    • Anaphylaxis or Extrapyrimidal reactions 
    •      Benadryl 50mg slow IV push or IM

    • Allergic reaction with itching
    •      Benadryl 25mg slow IV push or IM

    • Known hypersensitivity or allergy
    • Acute asthma attack
    • Narrow-angle glaucoma (relative)

    • Increased effect with other CNS depressants

    • Paradoxical CNS excitation
