Muscles

  1. M. rectus capitis posterior major
    Originates from spinous process of C2 to lateral portion of the inferior nuchal line.

    Extends and rotates head.


  2. M. rectus capitis posterior minor
    Originates from spinous process of C2 to lateral portion of the inferior nuchal line.

    Extends and rotates head.


  3. M. scalenous anterior
    Originates from trans. proc. of C3-6 and inserts as the scalene tubercle

    Raises first rib (respiration), lat. flex and rotate neck. 
  4. M. scalenous medius
    Originates from trans. proc. of C2-7 and inserts to the upper medial surface of 1st rib

    Raises first rib (respiration), lat. flex and rotate neck.
  5. M. scalenous posterior
    Originate from trans. proc. of C5-7 and inserts to tuberosity of 2nd rib.

    Raises 2nd rib (respiration), lat. flex and rotate neck. 
  6. M. serratus anterior
    Originates from outer surfaces of ribs 1-8 to anterior surface of medial scapular border.

    Rotates scapula for abduction and flexion of arm, protracts scapula. 
  7. M. obliquus externus abdominis
    Originates from lower 8 ribs towards sternum and inserts into the ischial crest. 

    Lat. flex and rotates vert, column, compresses abdomen. 
  8. Mm. intercostalis
    intercostal muscles that create the costal groove
  9. M. temporalis
    Originates from temporal line and descends through zygomatic fossa to insert in coronoid process of mandible. Covers portions of parietal, frontal, and temporal.   

    Closes lower jaw, clenches teeth 
  10. M. semispinalis capitis 
    Originates from trans. proc. C4-T7 and inserts between superior and inferior nuchal lines. Mustache muscle!

    Extends and rotates head. 
  11. M. sternocleidosmastoideous
    Originates from manubrium and calvicular heads and inserts into mastoid process and lat superior nuchal line

    Bends neck laterally, flexes neck, and elevates chin. 
  12. M. splenius capitis
    Originate from lig. nuchae and spin. proc. of C7-T4 and inserts to lateral superior nuchal line and mastoid process.

    Extend, hyperextend head and neck, lat. flex and rotate neck and head.
  13. M. digastricus
    Originates from digastric fossa of mastoid process and mandible and inserts intermediately with tendon attached to hyoid

    Raises hyoid, moves hyoid forward and backward. Swallowing.
  14. M. trapezius
    Originates from superior nuchal line, ext. occip. protub. and spin. proc. of C7-T12 and inserts to lateral clavicle, middle acromion proc. and medial crest of scapular spine

    Movement of scapula to facilitate arm movement. 
  15. M. masseter
    Originates from the zygomatic arch and masseteric tubercle and inserts to lateral surfaces of angle, ramus, and coronoid.

    Closes lower jaw, clenches teeth.
  16. M. pterygoid medialus
    Originates from lat. petrygoid plate, palatine, and maxilla tuberosity and inserts to medial ramus and angle

    Closes lower jaw, clenches teeth.
  17. M. pterygoid lateralis
    Originates from lat. greater wing and lat. peterygoid plate to pterygoid fossa of mandible.

    Closes lower jaw, clenches teeth.
