  1. Factorial Design
    • A design in which all levels of each independent variable are combined with all levels of the other independent variables.
    • Designs with more than 1 independent variable (or factor).
    • A factorial design allows investigation of the separate main effects and interactions of 2 or more independent variables.
  2. Independent groups design (Between-subjects design)
    An experiment in which different subjects are assigned to each group
  3. Interaction
    Situation in which the effect of 1 independent variable on the dependent variable changes, depending on the level of another independent variable.
  4. IV X PV design
    A factorial design that includes both an experimental independent variable (IV) and a nonexperimental participant (PV).
  5. Main effect
    The direct effect of an independent variable on a dependent variable
  6. Mixed factorial design
    A design that includes both independent groups (between-subjects) and repeated measures (wintin-subjects)
  7. Moderator variable
    • A variable that influences the nature of the relationship between 2 other variables (an independent variable and a dependent variable).
    • In a factorial design, the effect of the moderator variable is revealed as an interaction.
  8. Repeated measures design (Within-subjects design)
    An experiment in which the same subjects are assigned to each group
  9. Simple main effect
    In a factorial design, the effect of one independent variable at a particular level of another independent variable.
  10. Define factorial design and discuss reasons a researcher would use this design.
    • A design in which all levels of each independent variable are combined with all levels of the other independent variables.

  11. Describe the information provided by main effects and interaction effects in a factorial design.
    • Main effect: overall relationship between the independent variable and the dependent variable.
    • Interaction effect: indicates that the effect of 1 independent variable different at different levels of the other independent variable.
  12. Describe an IV X PV design.
    • A factorial design that includes both an experimental independent variable (IV) and a nonexperimental participant (PV).
    • Allows researchers to investigate how different types of individuals respond to the same manipulated variable.

    • Simplest:
    • 1 manipulated independent variable with at least 2 levels
    • 1 participant variable with at least 2 levels
  13. Discuss the role of simple main effects in interpreting interactions.
    • Examines mean differences at each level of the independent variable
    • The results are analyzed as if we had separate experiments at each level of the other independent variable.
  14. Compare the assignment of participants in an independent groups design, a repeated measures design, and a mixed factorial design.
    • Independent groups design: different group of participants assigned to each condition
    • Repeated measures design: same individuals will participate in all conditions.
    • Mixed factorial design: Combination of independent groups and repeated measures.
