Sensory nervous system
sends information to tbe CNS from internal organs or from external stimuli
sensations detected by receptors
carried by sensory neurons from specialized organs to specific areas of the cerebral cortex
Motor nervous system
part of the frontal lobe
Primary motor cortex
carries info from CNS to organs, muscles and glands
controls discrete skeletal muscle movement
stimulation of right cortex produces muscle contractions on the left or contralateral side of body
Premotor motor cortex
controls coordinated muscle movement
Supplemental motor area
involved in planning complex movements and in coordinating movements with both hands
Lumbar puncture and spinal tap
to obtain CSF for diagnostic procedures
to treat disease by administering antibiotics or cancer agents into the spinal canal
to administer local anesthetics
to remove CSF for decreasing spinal fluid pressure
Angiography
allows visualization of cerebral circulation by use of radiopaque materials
Computed tomography scans (CT)
used for diagnosing pathological conditions such as tumors, hemorrhages, hematomas, hydrocephalus
Electromyelography (EMG)
radiographic process using contrast medium injected into lumbar subarachnoid space to view and photograph spinal cord and spinal subarachnoid space
Electroencephalography (EEG)
records electrical activity of the brain (brain wave)
Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
noninvasive technique using a powerful magnetic field to align hydrogen atoms in water in the body
provides much greater contrast between the different soft tissues of the body than CT scan
Ophthalmoscopy
examines interior structure of the eye, including the lens, retina and optic nerve
Tonometry
measures the pressure inside the eye (intraocular pressure - IOP)
Auditory examiniation
used to determine tone quality and/or hearing loss
