    It is the ability to cause changes in matter.

    Energy is involved when matter moves or changes its shape.

    Energy  can change from one form to another.

    Energy can be transferred from one object to another.

    Energy that an object has because of its position or its condition.
  4. What is kinetic energy?
    The energy an object has because of motion.

    When it is going down the hill.

    It is a form of energy that is carried as waves in vibrating matter.

    It is a type of kinetic energy because particles of matter are moving.

    It is the cause of all the sounds you hear.

    It is the total kinetic energy of the particles that make up a substance.

    It is a form of energy that can travel through space.

    Light can also travel through some types of matter, such as air or glass.

    Light energy travels as waves.

    It is energy caused by the movement of electric charges.

    Electrical energy can change to other types of energy you can use.

    Mechanical Energy = Kinetic Energy + Potential Energy
  16. What is chemical energy?
    It is energy that is stored in matter and that can be released by a chemical reaction.
  17. What does your body do when it needs energy?
    When your body needs energy, it breaks down food and releases potential chemical energy from it.

    If you use that energy, it changes into kinetic energy.

    It also uses stored chemical energy in food to produce thermal energy.
  18. When you wind a key in a toy, what happens?
    Winding the key on the toy increases the toy's mechanical energy.

    Our bodies use the chemical energy in food to move and stay warm.

    The hands on the watch move because the watch has mechanical energy.

    During conduction, the particles in substances do not move.

    Energy is passed from particle to particle as they vibrate and bump against one another.
  51. What happens to water in a pot?
    The warm water in the pot is less dense than the cool water above it.

    The warm water rises and the cool water falls.
  52. What happens to the Sun when it hits the Earth?
    When the Sun's energy hits Earth, some of the energy is absorbed and warms Earth's surface.

    Some of the energy is bounced back toward space.

    Air is a good insulator and keeps heat close to your body.

    The bending of light as it passes from one material to another.
  55. What is reflection?
    The bouncing of light rays off the surface of a material.

    Sound is a type of compressional wave.

    It is caused by vibration.
  57. How does light travel?
    Light travels as a traverse wave.

    It can travel through matter and through empty space.
  58. How are the light waves organized?
    The types of waves are organized from the shortest wavelength to the longest.
  59. How does light react when it hits matter?
    Light can act in different ways when it strikes matter.

    Dark-colored materials absorb more light than light-colored materials.
  60. At what speed does light travel?
    Light travels at different speeds through different materials.

    It travels fastest through gases and slowest through solids.
