Patho 3

  1. Normal anion gap
    • 5 - 11 mEq/L
    • (8 mEq/L)
  2. What are implications of high anion gap?
    • Strongly suggests:
    • = lactic acidosis (lactate)
    • = ketoacidosis (BOH butyrate)
    • = renal failure (sulfates, phosphates)
    • = ingestion of certain poisons - salicylates (produce excess acid metabolites)
  3. What is anion gap if HCO3- decreased and Cl- increased?
    • Normal range = 5 - 11 mEq/L
    • Examples:
    • = gut (laxative abuse)
    • = kidney disorders
  4. Anion Gap formula
    (Be able to calculate)
    Anion Gap = [Na+] - [Cl-] + [HCO3-]
  5. Osmolol Gap
    • high osmolol gap = solutes present in plasma that are not normally there
    • strongly suggests methanol or ethylene glycol intoxication (esp. if greater than 25 mOsmol/kg)
