Marine Bio: properties of water/salinity

  1. name the 7 properties of water.
    • -water has strong skin (surface tension)
    • -water stays cold (heat capacity)
    • -water sticks to water (cohesion)
    • -water absorbs
    • -water can both sink and float
    • -water can change forms
  2. what is water?  how are they linked?
it has 2 hydrogen atoms combined with 1 oxygen atom.  Linked together by a covalent bond which means they share electrons.
  3. what's a polar molecule? give an example and how.
electrically unbalanced.  ex: water.  because hydrogens are partially + and oxygen are partially -
  4. how is polarit important in water?
it allows bond to be created among water molecules.
  5. ice to water. water to water vapor.
    melting. evaporating
  6. vapor to water and water to ice?
    condensing. freezing.
  7. what's latent heat of fusion
energy needed to switch from water to ice. (80 calories)
  8. what's latens heat of vaporization?
energy or heat needed to switch from water to vapor.
  9. what's heat capacity?
abilty of a substance to give up or take in heat and undergo temperature changes.
  10. what's cohesion?
the attachment of water molecules to each other by H bonds.
  11. what's surface tension?
measure how difficult it is to stretch or break the surface of a liquid.
  12. what's viscosity?
it's the pourability and how easily a liquid is poured.

water has low. pancake has high viscosity
  13. what's compressability?
the ability to squish an object to occupy a smaller volume.
  14. what's density?
    how "heavy" something is.
  15. what's salinity?
the total quantitiy of dissolved salt in seawater. it measures the amount of salt in a liquid.
  16. where does the salt come from?  (5)
    • -earth's crust and earth's interior.
    • -volcanic eruption
    • -river run off
    • -hydrothermal vents
    • -evaporites
  17. what are aniona and give examples.
    negatively charged ions. CL-
  18. what are cations?
    • positively charged ions.
    • Na+
  19. how is the salinity measured today?
    electrical conductivity of sea water
  20. is salinity constant throughout all oceans? why/ what are the factors?
NO. latitude, water cycle, river flows, wind patterns, season
  21. how can the sea get saltier?
    evaporation and sea ice formation
  22. how can the sea become fresher?
percipitation, sea ice melting, freshwater run off
  23. what's adsorption?
the ions stick to particles in the sea and become sediments
  24. what's salinity?
    total dissolves solids.
  25. what does Principle of Constant Propertions allow us to do?
    determine salinity
  26. what's sublimation?
    changing ice directly into vapors.
  27. "As salinity increases, the density of water ____"
    increases
  28. "As pressure increases, the density of water ____
    "
    increases
  29. As temperature increases, the density of water ____"
    decreases
