    The continuous assessment of the current situation used to determine if the current operation is proceeding according to the commander's intent and if planned future operations are supportable.
  6. Definition of Intelligence Preparation of the Battlefield (IPB)
    • A systematic process of analyzing and visualizing the portions of the mission variables of threat, terrain, weather, and civil considerations in a specific area of interest and for a specific mission.
    • By applying intelligence preparation of the battlefield, commanders gain the information necessary to selectively apply and maximize operational effectiveness at critical points in time and space.

    A geographical area, complex, or installation planned for capture or destruction by military forces. Targets include the wide array of mobile and stationary forces, equipment, capabilities, and functions that an enemy commander can use to conduct operations at any level -- strategic, operational, or tactical.

    • High Value Target (HVT-E) - Those assets that the Enemy Commander requires for successful completion of his mission.
    • An HVT becomes an HPT with actionable intelligence.

  19. Definition of Time Sensitive Targets
    • Those targets requiring immediate response because they pose (or will soon pose) a danger to friendly forces or are highly lucrative, fleeting targets of opportunity.

    • Target Synch Matrix (TSM): Prioritized matrix of targets that should be acquired and attacked during the upcoming cycle or phase.
    • High Payoff Target List (HPTL): A prioritized list of high-payoff targets by phase of the joint operation.
    • Attack Guidance Matrix (AGM): Desired effects, when, and how targets should be attacked.
    • Target Selection Standards (TSS): Accuracy requirements or other specific criteria that must be met before targets can be attacked.
