Chapter 10.txt

  1. MEDIASTINUM
In the thoracic cavity cradled between the lungs.
  2. Precordium
the area of the chest covering the heart
  3. Pericardium
The thin double walled membranous sac that surrounds the heart
  4. PERIETAL PERICARDIUM
The outer covering of the sac.
  5. VISCERAL PERICARDIUM
The inner layer of the sac. The thin tight covering over the heart surface.
  6. PERICARDIAL CAVITY
The small space betweent eh two layers.
  7. THREE LAYERS OF THE HEART
    • Epicardium- Outer layer
    • Myocardium- Middle muscular layer
    • Endocardium- Inner layer
  8. UPPER CHAMBERS
    Left and Right Atria-Receiving chambers
  9. Lower Chambers
Left and Right Ventricles- The pumping chambers
  10. Septum
Wall betweent the left and right side of the heart
  11. INTERATRIAL SEPTUM
    Dividing the Atria
  12. Interventricular Septum
    Dividing the ventricles
  13. Superior Vena Cava
Brings blood from the head, thorax, and upper limbs.
  14. Inferior Vena Cava
Brings blood from the trunk, abdominal viscera, and lower limbs.
  15. Tricuspid Valve
A valve that deoxygenated blood passes through.
  16. Pulmonary Arteries
Carries oxygen poor blood to the capilary network of the lungs.
  17. Pulmonary Circulation
The circulation of the blood from the heart to the lungs for oxygenation and back to the heart
  18. Pulmonary veins
The veins that return oxygenated blood to the heart.
  19. Systemic Circulation
The circulation of the blood from the heart to all parts of the body and back to the heart
  20. Coronary Arteries
Supply blood to the heart muscle
  21. Conduction System
Methodically generates and conducts electrical impulses throughout the myocardium, and creates the rhythmic contraction of the heart.
  22. Arteries
Large thick walled vessels that carry blood away from the heart
  23. Artereoles
Thin walled arteries composed of smooth muscle carry blood to the capillaries
  24. Capillaries
Allow for the exchange of material between the blood and the tissue fluid surounding the body cells
  25. Venules
The smallest veins which collect deoxygenated blood from the cells for transport back to the heart
  26. Cardiac Cycle
One cardiac cycle is equivalent to one complete heart beat
  27. Systole
Phase of the cardiac cycle forcing blood out of the heart
  28. Diastole
Phase of the cardiac cycle allowing the heart to refill with blood
  29. Pulmonary Artery
Carries blood back to the lungs for oxygenation
  30. Blood pressure
The pressure exerted by the blood on the walls of the arteries
  31. Systolic Pressure
    Maximum Pressure
  32. Diastolic Pressure
    Minimum Pressure
  33. Arrhythmia
Any deviation from the normal pattern of the heartbeat
