  1. air seal
    a method of closure or a method of sealing a vault that utilizes the air pressure created by placing the dome of the vault onto the base of the vault
  2. air tray
    a transfer container consisting of a wooden tray with a cardboard covering for the casket
  3. alloy
    a substance composed of two or more metals
  4. alternative container
    an unfinished wood box or other non-metal receptacle or enclosure, without ornamentation or a fixed interior lining, which is designed for the encasement of human remains and which is made of fiberboard, pressed-wood, composition material, or pouches of canvas (with or without an outside covering) or like materials
  5. apron
    the lining attached to the undersurface of the foot panel of the casket and/or a component part of the throw (overlay/overthrow) which extends downward into the body of the casket
  6. arm
    the part of the casket handle that attaches the bar to the lug (ear)
  7. average
    the sum of a group of numbers divided by the number of units
  8. bail handle
    a swingle handle in which the lug, arm, and bar are combined in one unit
  9. bar
    that part of the casket handle, attached to the lug or arm, which is grasped by the casket bearer
  10. base
    the lower or supporting part of a monument

    in some monuments, there may be a first, second, and third base
  11. base molding
    molding along the lowermost edge of the body panels
  12. bed
    the portion of the casket upon which the deceased human remains are placed
  13. bench
    a type of cemetery memorial consisting of a top piece supported by two standards

    used to identify family burial plots or used in conjunction with a family monument
  14. bevel top marker
    a small headstone, set above ground, with a slightly slanting top
  15. bier
    typically a stand upon which a casket is placed for viewing and services, but sometimes a means of merchandise display
  16. bi-unit pricing
    a method of price quotation showing separately the price of the service to be rendered and the price of the casket
  17. block
    a subdivision of a cemetery containing several lots
  18. body
    that portion of the casket shell containing the top body molding, body panel, base molding, and casket bottom
  19. body ledge
    top body molding
    a molding along the uppermost edge of the body panels
  20. body ledge flange
    top body molding flange
    the horizontal portion of the top body molding (body ledge) where the gasket is placed on gasketed caskets
  21. body lining
    material which drapes the inside perimeter of the body of the casket
  22. body panels
    composed of the sides and ends of the casket shell
  23. broadcloth
    a twilled, napped, woolen or worsted fabric with a smooth lustrous face and denise texture

    a fabic usually made of cotton, silk, rayon woven in a plain or weave with a soft semi-gloss finish
  24. bronze
    a metal alloy consisting of 90% copper with tin and sometimes zinc comprising the other 10%
  25. brushed finished
    bare metal is scratched with an abrasive material and then finished until a smooth high gloss is obtained
  26. cap
    the topmost part of the casket shell, including the ogee, crown, pie, and header
  27. cap panel
    the focal part of the interior which fills the inside of the crown, sometimes bordered by the roll (cove)

    may be referred to as the panel
  28. casket
    a rigid container which is designed for the encasement of human remains and which is usually constructed of wood, metal, or like material and ornamented and lined with fabric (FTC)

    a case or receptacle in which human remains are placed for protection, practical utility, and a suitable memory picture

    any box or container of one or more parts in which a dead human body is placed prior to interment, entombment, or cremation which may or may not be permanently interred, entombed, or cremated with the dead human remains
  29. casket liner
    a removable metal unit that is placed inside a wooden casket shell to provide protective qualities
  30. cast hardware
    the most expensive hardware production method in which molten metal is poured into a mold, allowed to cool, and is then removed from the mold
  31. cenotaph
    a monument erected to the memory of the dead, with the dead human body not present
  32. church truck
    a wheeled, collapsible support for the casket, used in the funeral home, church, or home
  33. coffin
    a case or receptacle for dead human remains which is anthropoidal in shape
  34. combination case
    a transfer container consisitng of a particle board box with a cardboard tray and cover to satisfy air shipping regulations
  35. combination unit
    any product consisting of a unit or a series of units which are designed or intended to be used together as both a casket and as a permanent burial receptacle
  36. composition board
    particle board
    pressed board
    particle of wood bonded togetherwith waterproof glue

    the different types are distinguished by the size and shape of the particles of wood used
  37. concrete
    an artificial stone like material that is made by mixing cement, sand and broken stone with water and allowing the mixture to harden
  38. concrete box
    an outer enclosure of two or three component parts of unfinished concrete
  39. copper
    a malleable, ductile, metallic element having a characteristic reddish brown color
  40. cotton
    th soft, white, downy fibers of the cotton seed
  41. cove
     a component part of the casket interior which lines the rim (ogee) and surrounds the cap panel
  42. crepe
    a thin crinkled cloth of silk, rayon, cotton, or wool that is used in casket construction as a lining material
  43. crinkled finish
    an exterior casket finish in which the metal is coated with a substance that wrinkles as it dries

    usually used on less expensive caskets
  44. crown
    the uppermost part of the cap of the casket, extending from rim to rim

    everything above the rim
  45. crushed interior
    a form of casket interior style that is created by placing a lining material on a metal form, weights added, the material is steamed, and then attached to a suitable backing (upholstery) material
  46. crypt
    a chamber in a mausoleum, of sufficient size, generally used to contain the casketed remains of a deceased person
  47. die
    a main part of a monument, the upright portion above the base where the inscription is located
  48. doeskin
    a heavy durable cotton fabric with a short (1/8th inch or less), thick, velvety nap on one side

    woven cloth with a suede-like appearance with a nap of less than 1/8th inch which is used as an exterior covering material for caskets
  49. double seal
    a method of closure that utilizes the principle of the air seal in cinjunction with an epoxy material at the junction of the dome and the base of the vault
  50. elliptic
    a casket having ends in the shape of a half circle
  51. embossed
    material having raised designs above the surface

    ornamental raised work
  52. end seal
    a method of sealing which utilizes a rubber gasket which is held in place on the head section of the vault
  53. epitaph
    an inscription placed on a monument to commemorate the deeds or qualities of the departed
  54. extendover
    the portion of the casket interior which extends over the top body molding (body ledge) for aesthetic value
  55. ferrous metal
    any metal formed from iron (steel or stainless steel)
  56. fiberglass
    a material consisting of extremely fine filaments of glass embedded in various resins
  57. fishail
    the wedge shaped portion of the cap (lid) at each end of the crown
  58. flush marker
    a small headstone which is set with its top even with the surrounding terrain
  59. foot candle
    the amount of illumination produced produced by a source of one candle at a distance of one foot
  60. fractional display
    use of portions of caskets (1/2, 1/4, 1/8) in the selection room vs. full sized caskets
  61. galvanized
    steel that has been coated with zinc for increased resistance to rust
  62. gasket channel
    found on cut top gasketed caskets

    is an integral part of the foot panel header on gasketed caskets

    the function is to hold the transverse gasket to seal the space between the head and foot caps
  63. gauge
    a measurement of thickness of metals

    the number of sheets of metal necessary to equal approximately one inch of thickness
  64. gimp
    a strip of metal, plastic, or cloth that is attached to the inside of the panel, covering the area at which point the roll (cove) is anchored
  65. graduated recovery
    the return of money produced by varying the amount expected on each selection
  66. grave
    an excavation in the earth as a place for interment
  67. grave liner
    as outer enclosure which offers protection from the earth load but without sealing qualities
  68. half couch casket
    a casket so designed as to display the deceased from the waist up
  69. hammertone finish
    a sprayed finish that has the appearance of small indentation in the metal (as if struck with a ball peen hammer)

    the "indentations" are in the paint and appear as the paint dries

    usually found on inexpensive caskets
  70. hardwood
    any tough, heavy timber with a compact texture

    any deciduous tree (any tree that loses its leaves annually)
  71. hardwood casket
    a casket made of woods that are heavy, close-grained, resistant woods, that are the ultimate in wood caskets and among the most expensive to purchase
  72. head panel
    a component part of the casket interior which is inside the head portion of the cap

    no distinction is made between the head panel and foot panel in full couch caskets
  73. inner panels
    fuctional or ornamental covering that usually covers the foot end of the casket in full couch caskets

    may be located at both the head and foot of the full couch casket
