  1. Metaphor
    a direct comparison between two unlike things

    Ex: His words were sharp knives
  2. Imagery
    sensory details denotiong specific physical experiences (describing something)

    Ex: The bright orange sun was setting over the deep blue ocean, setting the sky and sea ablaze with light.
  3. Onomatopoeia
    refers to individual words like "splash" or "thud" whose meanings are closely related to their sounds
  4. Rhyme
    an unexpeceted word is magically made to fit with another

    Ex: There was this frog who sat on a log waiting for the hog, but along came this dog that frightened the frog, and now the frog rests in the bog.
  5. End-Rhyme
    a rhyme pattern in a poem that falls at the end of the lines

    • Ex: Do not go gentle into that good night
    • Old age should burn and rave at close of day;
    • Rage, rage against the dying of the light.
  6. Assonance
    The repetition of similar sounding vowel sounds
