Basic Body Structure and Function

  1. Anatomy
    The study of what body parts look like, where they are located, how big they are, and how they connect to other body parts
  2. Cell
    The basic unit of life
  3. Cell membrane
    A membrane that surrounds the cytoplasm and gives the cell its shape
  4. Cytoplasm
    The jelly-like substance within a cell within which the organelles float
  5. Disease
    A condition that occurs when the structure or function of an organ or an organ system is abnormal
  6. Homeostasis
    A state of balance
  7. Nucleus
    The cell's "brain;" it contains all of the information the cell needs in order to do its job, grow, and reproduce
  8. Organ
    A group of tissues functioning together for a similar purpose
  9. Organ system
    A group of organs that work together to perform a specific function for the body
  10. Organelles
    Structures inside of the cell that help the cell to make the energy it needs to stay alive and to rid itself of waste products
  11. Organism
    A living thing, such as an animal or a plant
  12. Physiology
    The study of how the body parts work
  13. Tissue
    A group of cells similar in structure and specialized to perform a specific function
