How do you add fractions?
Change the denominator (bottom number) to the lowest common demoninator. Do not add bottom numbers together. Add top numbers only.
-
How do you subract fractions?
Change the denominator (bottom number) to the lowest common demoninator. Do not subract bottom numbers together. Subract top numbers only.
-
How do you multiply fractions?
- 1. Multiply the top numbers (the numerators).
- 2. Multiply the bottom numbers (the denominators).
- 3. Simplify the fraction if needed.
-
How do you divide fractions?
- Step 1. Turn the second fraction (the one you want to divide by) upside-down (this is now a reciprocal).
- Step 2. Multiply the first fraction by that reciprocal
- Step 3. Simplify the fraction (if needed)
-
Expressions
Collection of numbers, variables, operation symbols and grouping symbols.
-
Absolute vaulue
Distance from zero on a number line. This number can never be negative
-
What is the rule for subracting negative numbers?
- Change the sign of the second number, then add the two numbers using the rules for addition:
- ADDITION RULEIf the signs are the same then you add the two numbers and keep the sign.If the signs are different, subtract the two numbers and take the sign of the larger number.
Ex. 6 - 2 = 6 + (-2) = 4 Ex. -6 - -2 = -6 + (+2) = -4 Ex. -6 - 2 = -6 + (-2) = -8 Ex. 6 - -2 = 6 + (+2) = 8

If you multiple even number of negatives, will the number be positive or negative?
Positive
-
If you multiple odd number of negatives, will it be positive or negative?
Negative
-
a+b=b+a
Commutative. Just changes the ORDER of the numbers.
-
(a+b)+c=a+(b+c)
Associative. ORDER stays the same
-
Addition a + 0 = a
Multiplication a x 1 = a
Identity
-
a(b + c) = ab + ac
Distributive. Distribute the numbers
-
a+(-a)=0
- Inverse
- Inverse Properties state that when a number is combined with its inverse, it is equal to its identity.
- There are two types of inverses of a number: Additive Inverse and Multiplicative Inverse.
- addition: add the oppostite of number a+(-a)=0
- mulitply 8*1/8=1
