Respiratory System

  1. what is the respiratory system?
A collection of organs whose primary function is to take oxygen and expel carbon dioxide
  2. How are breathing and respirating different?
Breathing is just inhaling an exhaling, but respirating is the exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide between living cells and their environment.
  3. What is the nose?
the nose is the main passageway into and out of the R. system. Air can also enter and exit through the mouth
  4. What is the function of mucus and cilia.
Mucus traps and filters air. While cilia sweep the mucus to the back of the throat.
  5. What is the pharynx?
the pharynx, or throat, splits into two tubes the esophagus and larynx which contains the vocal cords.
  6. How do the vocal cords work?
vocal cords are a pair of elastic bands that stretch across the larynx. Muscles connected to them control how tight they are. When air moves between the vocal cord the vibrate to produce sound.
  7. What is the trachea?
A tube that connects the larynx to the lungs. It is protected by rings of cartilage.
  8. What are the bronchi?
Two tubes that branch off of the trachea, that connect to the bronchioles(smaller tubes that branch off of the bronchi).
  9. What are Alveoli?
Tiny sacs of air in the lungs where oxygen and carbon dioxide are exchanged.
  10. What happens when you breath in?
the diaphragm contracts and moves down, your rib muscles contract lifting your rib cage, the chest cavity increases creating a vacuum, and air is sucked in.
  11. What is cellular respiration?
Cellular respiration is the process inside a cell in which oxygen is used to release energy stored in molecules of glucose.
  12. What is asthma?
someone with asthma has trouble breathing(the bronchioles narrow). Asthma attacks are often triggered pollen or dust.
  13. What is emphysema?
Emphysema is caused by damage to the alveoli it makes it harder to breath.
  14. What is SARS
SARS stands for Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome. It is the result of a virus, a person with SARS would experience a fever and difficulty to breath.
  15. How do the Cardiovascular system and the Respiratory system work together?
Blood picks up oxygen in the lungs and carries it to the rest of the body. Blood also drops of carbon dioxide so the lungs can expel it.
