There are two ways to measure the round trip transaction response time experienced by end users: passive and active.

Passive monitoring involves deploying agents on desktops at the end user's location. These agents watch events or packets without slowing down the transaction.

Active measurement involves simulating transactions (synthetic transaction) from a designated machine at defined interval.

Use active measurement (or Synthetic Transactions) to obtain a 24/7 server application response time report as it does not require a user to be present.

Synthetic end user monitoring is a type of active monitoring that continuously monitor user experience using transactions generated by programs that exercise the application server in the same manner as an end-user or application client.
