What is a Ballad?
A poem that tells a story.
What is a Blank Verse?
A poem that is unrhymed but has meter.
What is a Cinquain?
Poems that are five lines in lenght.
What is a Couplet?
Two lines of verse that often rhyme and convey one complete idea.
What is an Elegy?
A poem about death or the sadness related to the death of an important person.
What is an Epic poem?
A poem of lengthy proportions that is a story or tells the adventures of a hero.

A poem without meter or rhyme scheme.
What is a Haiku?
A form of Japanese poetry often about nature. 5-7-5
What is an Ode?
Long lyric with much imagery and full of poetic devices.
What is a Sonnet?
A 14-line poem that states the poet's personal feelings. (Shakespearean [English] or Petrarchan [Italian]).

in regard to word recognition strategies?
The ability to use words, meanings, and context to extract meaning of unknown words.
There are three types of context clues that readers may use.
1. Semantic clues (meaning)
2. Syntactic clues (word order)
3.) Symbolic clues (pictures)

Recognizing frequent letter groups. Included in this category are prefixes, suffixes, and inflectional endings.

Readers are able to draw connections between patterns, simple words, and syllables.
