  1. What is a Ballad?
    A poem that tells a story.
  2. What is a Blank Verse?
    A poem that is unrhymed but has meter.
  3. What is a Cinquain?
    Poems that are five lines in lenght.
  4. What is a Couplet?
    Two lines of verse that often rhyme and convey one complete idea.
  5. What is an Elegy?
    A poem about death or the sadness related to the death of an important person.
  6. What is an Epic poem?
    A poem of lengthy proportions that is a story or tells the adventures of a hero.
  7. What is Free Verse
    A poem without meter or rhyme scheme.
  8. What is a Haiku?
    A form of Japanese poetry often about nature. 5-7-5
  9. What is an Ode?
    Long lyric with much imagery and full of poetic devices.
  10. What is a Sonnet?
    A 14-line poem that states the poet's personal feelings. (Shakespearean [English] or Petrarchan [Italian]).
  11. Acrostic
    The letters of a word are used to begin each line in the poem.
  12. What are the 4 basic strategies for Word Recognition?
    Instant recognition

    Context clues

    Word structure clues

    Analogy clues
  13. What is Instant recognition in regard to word recognition strategies?
    High frequency words (slight words). 100 words that make up 50% of the words read by adults.

    i.e. the, to, from, in, said, he, it, she, read, you, me, and
  14. What are Context clues in regard to word recognition strategies?
    The ability to use words, meanings, and context to extract meaning of unknown words.

    • There are three types of context clues that readers may use.
    • 1. Semantic clues (meaning)
    • 2. Syntactic clues (word order)
    • 3.) Symbolic clues (pictures)
  15. What are Word Structure clues in regard to word recognition strategies?
    Recognizing frequent letter groups. Included in this category are prefixes, suffixes, and inflectional endings.
  16. What are Analogy clues in regard to word recognition strategies?
    Readers are able to draw connections between patterns, simple words, and syllables.

    Comparing unknown words to known words.
