- Protrusion of a viscus through an abnormal opening or weakened area in the wall of the cavity in which it is normally contained
- Reducible: can poke it back
- Irreducible or Incarcerated: can't poke it back
- Strangulated !!!: twisted to cut off blood supply

- Visible
- Discomfort with tension
- Strangulated (s/sx obstruction)
- Severe Pain
- Vomiting
- Cramping Pain
- Distention
Collaborative care of pt w/hernia
- Surgery-laparoscopic
- Herniorrhaphy
- Hernioplasty
- Strangulated Hernia
- Post-op care
- Assess for voiding issues
- I & O
- Scrotal Edema: scrotal support/ice
- Splint with coughing/sneezing (open mouth)
- Lifting restriction (6-8 weeks)
- Truss
