What are DMARDs?
Disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs - ability to reduce or prevent joint damage and preserve joint integrity and function
Hydroxychloroquine
Plaquenil - inhibits IL-1 = decreased chemotaxis and phagocytosis. Causes retinal damage, rash, skin pigment changes, and peripheral neuropathy.
Sulfasalazine
Azulfidine - sulfapyridine metabolite inhits endothelial cell proliferation, ROS, and cytokines. Effects are quicker than Plaquenil. May cause GI intolerance, leukopenia and thrombocytopenia
Methotrexate
Rheumatrex - interferes with DNA synthesis - take only ONCE a WEEK. Teratogen (category X). May cause liver damage, leukopenia, thrombocytopenia, stomatitis.
