Osteoporosis Guidelines
2010 Clinical Practice Guidelines for the Dx and Mgmt of Osteoporosis in Canada:
- Clinical Assessment (practice OSCE visit)
- Assess them based on absolute fracture risk using:
History - risk factors for low BMD, fractures and falls
Physical exam - weight, height, rib to pelvis distance, occiput to wall distance, fall risk for get up and go test
Calculate absolute 10 year fracture risk
What are the blood tests to do if working someone up for osteoporosis?
- Caclcium
- CBC
- Creatinine
- Alkaline phosphatase
- TSH
- SPEP if have vertebral fractures
- 25-hydroxy Vitamin D ( only do after 3-4 months of Vit D supplementation and don't repeat if > 75 nM)
Risk Factors to ask about on history for low BMD, fractures and falls:
- Prior fragility #
- Parental
