Who is responsible for issuing a STOP at a HAZMAT incident?
Commander or above unless minor incident where FAO can.

- A small quantity of fuel, LPG or CNG from a motor vehicle or small portable container.
- A small spill of a domestic chemical in a residential premises, including sheds and garages.
- An odour of gas or minor leak in a residential premises.
- A spillage of a material confirmed to be non hazardous that does not present an environmental problem.

- Approach with caution from upwind and uphill.
- Assess local wind direction and advise Comms of approach direction for oncoming appliances.

6 Things to consider when investigating a HAZMAT?
- Establish initial Hot Zone
- Upgrade response if necessary
- Wear Level B in Hot Zone until CHEMDATA or TAC advise otherwise
- Use HAZCHEM code 4WE until full info is available.
- Remove all non-operational persons from Hot Zone and restrict further entry
- Request specialist resources such as absorbents or overdrums.

Define Snatch Rescue?
An operation to immediately remove, decontaminate and provide medical assistance to a casualty at an incident involving hazardous materials.

7 points of Snatch Rescue?
- Balance need to quickly remove casualties against risk of exposure to MFS Personnel.
- Level D PPE.
- Casualties and Crews to be kept isolated until decontaminated.
- Request SAAS.
- HP line laid out on perimeter of Hot Zone.
- Have crews wash casualty down.
- Assign firefighters to wrap casualty in blankets and administer first aid.

- Need to be treated as potential casualties.
- Will need decontamination and possibly first aid or medical care.
- Will be wet and turnout gear unusable.
- Will not be available for immediate deployment.

9 points of Decontamination at a HAZMAT incident?
- Designate and Officer and crew to establish zone and initiate procedure for decontamination.
- Decon personnel to wear appropriate PPE, usually level B.
- Runoff not to be contained unless directed by TAC.
- Wearer with lowest air pressure to be decon’d first.
- Consider use of air lines.
- Clean towels and clothing to be provided to personnel.
- Privacy to be provided for dis-robed personnel.
- Provide Shelter as necessary.
- Arrange Medical Exam if personnel affected by exposure to hazardous materials

- General decon plus undressing and thoroughly washing.

- Wrist tags to be worn for chemical/radiation if TAC directs.
