  8. chlorophytum molybdetes
    basidiomycota
    • common name: parasol mushroom
    • this species is part of the lepiota family, and has green spores and free gills. Similar to the Amanita mushrooms these are not safe to eat. These poisonous mushroom are found in lubbock and can be found in the grassy area around the fountain in the center of campus during spring and summer. Although cooking removes toxind in this species it is still not safe to eat.

    • Genus: Astraeus
    • Characteristics:
    • -ectomycorrhizal
    • -when dry the inner peridium splits allowing the spores to disperse
    • -When rewetted the outer peridium opens exposing the gleba
    • Species: Astraeus hyprometricus- False earth star
    • -these are common in big bend national park under oaks
    • Order: boletales
    • Family: sclerodermatacea
  11. Astreus hygrometricus
    Basidiomycota
    • Common name: earth star
    • These fungi are commonly found growing near oak trees throughout texas in the fall. Unlike true puffballs which form an ipening for the spores to escape from the outer coverings cracks on thes false puff balls then as the fruit bodies absorb moisture the arms open up exposing the spore packet inside. Raindrops hitting the spore packet cause the spores to puff out.
