Microbiology Block 2

  1. -use broad spectrum antibiotics: Cephalosporins and azithromysin
-active immunozation with conjugated PRP vaccines
-Rifampin prophylazxis to eliminate carriage in children at risk
    Treatment and Control: H. Influenze
  2. -minute, encapsulated gram-negative coccobacillus
    -causes pertussis or whopping caugh
    -life threatening in babies
-transmission: direct contact or inhalation of aerosols
-loss of ciliary mechanism leads to build up of mucus and blockage of the airways
    Bordella Pertussis
  3. receptors that recognize and bind to ciliated respiratory epithelial cells
-toxins that destroy and dislodge ciliated cells
    Virulence Factors of Bordetella Pertussis
  4. culture on Bordet-Gengou agar
-contains high % of blood (20-30%) to inactivate inhibitors in the agar
    Laboratory Diagnosis: Bordetella Pertussis
  5. Erythromycin
    Treatment for Bordetella toxin
  6. DTaP: acellular vaccine containing pertussis toxoid and 4 other purified proteins is recommeneded
-Given to children and tetanus toxoids
    Prevention: Bordetella Pertussis
  7. -obligate parasites of man and animal
    -Major Pathogens:
        *Acute pyogenic: normally invasive infection
        * Chronic infections w/ H. Influenza as 2o pathogen
Responsible for: epiglotitis menigitis, otitis, Pneumonia (EMOP) (lower respiratory disease) cellulitis, arthritis, sinusitis, and conjunctivitis
    Habitat and Transmission:
      Habitat: upper respiratory tract
      Tranmission: by respiratory droplets
    Haemophilus Influenze
  8. -polysaccharide capsule: capsular type b most invasive
    -IgA protease
-most cases of meningitis in children younger than 2YOA
b/c maternal antibody has died off and child immune response can be inadequate
    -NO exotoxins
    Pathogenesis of H. Influenza Infections
  9. Microscopy: sensitive test for H. Influenza in CSF, Capsular antigen present in serum or cerebrospinal fluid
Culture: chocolate agar (growth requires both factors X (hematin) and V (NAD)
Memory Tool: when a child has "flu" mom goes to five (V) and dime (X) store to buy some chocolate
    Diagnosis: H. Influenze
