Boolean Logic
The use of words of AND, OR, and NOT as logical operators when searching databases.
ie when searching for exercises for stroke patients, type "stroke and exercise" to narrow the search (pg 749-50)

exploding
to explode research (lol!) means that the research will retrieve results using the selected term and all of the more specific terms in the tree

focusing
to restrict the search; research will be limited to documents where the subject heading is the major point of the article

limits or filters
to refine search settings including language, dates of publication, or studies that are provided as full text

truncation or wildcard
symbols that databases recognize that can be used to allow a broad interpretation of a search term, finding plurals, spelling variations and alternate forms of words

recall
aka sensitivity, is the proportion of retrieved citations that are relevant, or the likelihood of finding relevant references; may include irrelevant studies but are more comprehensive

precision
aka specificity; is the proportion of citations that are relevant that the search is able to retrieve, or the likelihood of excluding irrelevant references. This may exclude some relevant studies but is more likely to include the very relevant ones.
