    2. What should Southern states be required to do to be readmitted to the Union.

    3. What should be done for the freedom
  2. Decision to remove Federal troops in 1877 and its impact on Americans.

What was the Legacy of Reconstruction?
Reconstruction did not achieve equality for African Americans.

Many African Americans still lived in poverty.

    • Legally, they could vote and hold public office.
    • But, many did not take part in politics.

They continue to face violence and prejudice.
  3. Decision to remove Federal troops in 1877 and its impact on Americans.
In the presidential election of 1876 there was no clear winner.

As part of the Compromise of 1877, Rutherford B. Hayes (Republican) became president and to make Democrats happy, ferderal troops were removed from the south.

As a result, Reconstuction governments in the South collapsed and Reconstruction ended.

    • 13th, 14th, and 15th Amendment became part of the Constitution.
    • This will provide a legal basis for the Civil rights movement in the 20th Century.
