  1. Inability to abduct arm at shoulder
    Sensory loss over upper arm
    • Nerve injured: axillary (C5, C6)
    • Injury: fractured surgical neck of humerus; anterior dislocation of humeral head
  2. Wrist drop
    Sensory loss of posterior arm, dorsal hand, and dorsal thumb
    • Nerve injured: radial (C5-T1)
    • Injury: fracture at midshaft of humerus; improper crutch use (with triceps weakness)
  3. Ape hand (loss of opposition of thumb)
    Loss of lateral finger flexion
    Loss of sensation of dorsal and palmar aspects of lateral 3.5 fingers & thenar eminence
    • Nerve injured: proximal median (C5-T1)
    • Injury: fracture of supracondylar humerus
  4. Ulnar deviation of wrist upon flexion
    Loss of sensation of dorsal and palmar aspects of lateral 3.5 fingers
    • Nerve injured: distal median ( C5-T1)
    • Injury: carpal tunnel; dislocated lunate
  5. Loss of medial finger flexion
    Radial deviation upon flexion
    Sensory loss of medial 1.5 fingers and hypothenar eminence
    • Nerve injured: ulnar (C8, T1)
    • Injury: fracture of medial epicondyle of humerus
  6. Loss of finger adduction
    Loss of thumb adduction
    Loss of extension of 4th & 5th fingers
    • Nerve injured: distal ulnar (C8, T1)
    • Injury: fracture of hook of hamate (from falling on outstretched hand)
  7. Loss of arm abductors
    Loss of arm lateral rotators
    Loss of supination
    (Waiter's tip)
    • Nerve injured: Upper trunk of brachial plexus
    • Injury: shoulder dystocia stretch head away from ipsilateral shoulder during birth or a fall)
  8. Sensory loss over lateral forearm
    Loss of biceps, brachialis, coracobrachialis
    Loss of flexion of arm at elbow
    • Nerve injured: musculocutaneous (C5-C7)
    • Injury: upper trunk compression
  9. Clawing of all digits (loss of lumbricals, forearm finger flexors, and finger extensors)
    • Nerve injured: lower trunk of brachial plexus (C8, T1)
    • Injury: upward pulling of arm (during birth or fall)
  10. Loss of thigh adduction
    Loss of sensation over medial thigh
    • Nerve injured: obturator (L2-L4)
    • Injury: anterior hip dislocation
  11. Loss of thigh flexion and leg extension
    Loss of sensation of anterior thigh and medial leg
    • Nerve injured: femoral (L2-L4)
    • Injury: pelvic fracture
  12. Foot drop (loss of dorsiflexion)
    Loss of foot eversion
    Loss of toe extension
    Loss of sensation over anterolateral leg and dorsal aspect of foot
    • Nerve injured: common peroneal (L4-S2)
    • Injury: trauma to lateral aspect of neck; fibula neck fracture
  13. Loss of foot inversion
    Loss of plantar flexion
    Loss of toe flexion
    Loss of sensation over sole of foot
    • Nerve injured: tibial (L4-S2)
    • Injury: knee trauma
  14. Loss of thigh abduction (positive Trendelenburg)
    • Nerve injured: superior gluteal (L4-S1)
    • Injury: posterior hip dislocation; polio
  15. Can't climb stairs
    Can't rise from seated position
    • Nerve injured: inferior gluteal (L5-S2)
    • Injury: posterior hip dislocation
