Living Environment Body Systems

  1. What is the purpose of the digestive system?
To break molecules down so they can diffuse.
  2. What is the purpose of the respiratory system?
Use oxygen to break down molecules into energy.
  3. What is the purpose of the circulatory system?
To move molecules around the body.
  4. What is the purpose of the excretory system?
To remove harmful wastes from the body.
  5. What is the purpose of the nervous system?
To send signals along nerves to react to stimuli.
  6. What is the purpose of the endocrine system?
To send chemical messages to cells. More of a long term effect.
  7. What is the purpose of the immune system?
    To resist disease
  8. What is the purpose of the reproductive system?
To make more of an organism.
  9. What can the Regents call homeostasis?
Steady state, or dynamic equilibrium. Dynamic equilibrium is more accurate because it shows changing where steady state implies that it is consistant.
  10. What is a feedback mechanism?
A reaction to the changing stimuli, like heart rate increasing as muscle activity increases.
  11. What are the 5 causes of a disease?
Poor nutrition, inherited disorder, exposure to toxins, organ malfunction, and high-risk behaviors.
  12. What organisms can be considered pathogens?
Viruses, bacteria, fungi, and other parasites.
  13. What is cancer?
    Uncontrolled cell division
  14. What increases the chances of cancer?
    Exposure to radiation and chemicals
  15. What is a tumor?
    A mass of abnormal cells.
  16. What do viruses do in order to reproduce?
    They invade a species.
  17. How are bacterial diseases treated?
    Antibiotics
  18. How do parasites survive?
Feeding off of a host organism
  19. What is the role of the antigen in the immune response?
To trigger a response in the immune system.
  20. Why is it important that all cells have antigens?
White blood cells need to know to attack a foreign antigen.
  21. What make antibodies?
    White blood cells
  22. What are antibiotics made of?
    Protein
  23. What do antibodies do specifically?
Antibodies mark cells for white blood cells to attack and kill.
  24. What do antibodies have in common with enzymes?
They are made of protein, so they have a specific shape that determines their function.
  25. Why must a vaccine contain a weaker version of a pathogen?
That way the body can easily fight off the pathogen and remember how to fight it and it won't do any harm to the person.
