Lecture 9

  1. Muscle Movement in PNS (somatic)
    • - somatic (voluntary)
    • * affects skeletal muscles
    • * AcH works at neuromuscular junction:
    • - AcH released
    • - Binds to receptors on muscle fibers
    • - open sodium channels in membranes of muscle cell
    • - stimulates muscle contraction
  2. Muscle Movement in PNS (autonomic)
    • - Autonomic (involuntary)
    • * AcH is also important in parasympathetic system
    • * blocking AcH prevent messages
  3. Curare
    • - mixture of toxic plants used by South American tribes to produce dart poison
    • - When injected, causes muscle paralysis
    • - Strength gauged on effect:
    • * One-tree curare
    • * three-tree curare
    • - Mixtures vary by region & tribe
    • - can contain up to 30 spp.
  4. - Chondrodendron tomentosum (Menispermaceae)
    - Curarea toxifera(Menispermaceae)
    - Strychnos toxifera (Loganiaceae)
    • - Species used in curare
    • - 8 spp. native to Peru & Brazil
    • - stem & root bark
  5. tubocurarine
    • - active ingredeint in curare
    • - Muscle relaxant during surgery
    • -Blocks AcH at neuromuscular junction in somatic NS
