endocrine system

  1. adrenal cortex
outer section (cortex) of each adrenal gland; secretes cortisol, aldosterone, and sex hormones
  2. andrenal medulla
inner section (medulla) of each adrenal gland; secretes epinephrine and norepinephrine
  3. ovaries
located in the lower abdomen of a femal; responsible for egg production and estrogen and progesterone secretion
  4. pancreas
located behind the stomach. islet (alph and beta) cells (islet of Langerhans) secrete hormones from th pancreas. Secrete enzymes and aid in digestion
  5. parathyroid gland
four small glands on the posterior of the thyroid gland.
  6. pituitary gland (hypophysis)
located at the base of the brain in the sella turcica; anterior lobe (adenohypophysis) posterior lobe (neurohypophysis)
  7. testes
two glands enclosed in the scrotal sac of the scrotal; sperm production and tesosterone secretion
  8. thyroid gland
located at the neck; secretes thyroxine
  9. adrenaline (epinephrine)
secreted by the adrenal medulla; increases heart rate and blood pressure
  10. adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH)
secreted by the anterior lobe of the pituitary gland; stimulates the adrenal cortex
  11. aldosterone
secreted byt the adrenal cortex; increases sodium reabsorption
  12. catecholamines
hormones derived from an amino acid and secreted byt the adrenal meduall; epinephrine
  13. sella turcica
cavity in the skull that contains the pituitary gland
  14. target tissue
cells of an organ that are affected or timulated by specific hormones
  15. androgen
male hormone secreted by the testes and to a lesser extent adrenal cortex; testosterone
  16. antidiuretic hormone (ADH)
secreted by the porterior lobe of the pituitary gland; increases the reabsorption of water by the kidney
  17. calcitonin
secreted by the thyroid gland; decreases blood calcium levels
  18. cortisol
secreted by the adrenal cortex; inceases blood sugar; secreted in times of stress and had an anti-inflammatory effect
  19. epinephrine (adrenaline)
secreted by the adrenal MEDULLA; increases heart rate and blood pressure and dilates airways. "fight or flight"
  20. estradiol
    estrogen secreted by the ovaries
  21. estrogen
female hormone secreted by the ovaries and to a lesser extent by the adrenal CORTEX; estradiol and estrone
  22. follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH)
secreted by the anterior lobe; stimulates hormone secretion and egg production
  23. glucagon
secreted by the alpha islet cells of the pancreas; insulin helps glucose pass into cells, and it promotes the conversion of glycogen to glucose
  24. growth-hormone (GH); somatotropin
secreted by the anterior lobe of thepituitary gland; stimulates growth of bones and soft tissues
  25. insulin
secreted by BETA islet cells; glucose to glycogen
  26. luteinizing hormore (LH)
secreted by the anterior lobe; stimulates ovulation and testosterone
  27. somatotropin (STH)
secreted by the anterior lobe of the pituitary gland; growth hormone
  28. vasopressin
secreted by the posterior lobe of the pituitary gland; antidiuretic hormone
  29. thyroxine (T4)
secreted by the thyroid gland; tetraiodothyronine; increases metabolism in cells
  30. triiodothyronine (T3)
secreted by the thyroid gland; inceases metabolism in cells
  31. parathormone (PTH)
secreted by the parathyroid glands; increases blood calcium
  32. thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH)
secreted by the anterior lobe of the pituitary gland; acts on the thyroid gland to promote its functioning
