Science - Chapter 1

  1. What is a cell?
They are the building blocks of life.

It is the smallest part of a living thing.
  2. What is the nucleus?
It is the control center of a cell.
  3. What is the cytoplasm?
It is a gel-like liquid inside the cell membrane that contains the things that the cell needs to carry out life processes.
  4. What is the chloroplast?
It is a special part of a plant that traps the energy in sunlight for making food.

Plants need this energy to make food.
  5. What are all living things made up of?
All living things are made of cells.
  6. What is an organ?
A group of tissues that work together to do a special job makes an organ.
  7. What is a tissue?
A group of the same cells make up tissues.
  8. All living things are made of these parts. What are they?
The tissues, organs and organ systems.
  9. What is an organ system?
A group of organs that work together make up an organ system.
  10. What does the cell membrane do?
It lets things move in and out of the cell.
  11. What is a cell wall and where is it found?
    Plants have a cell wall.

It is outside of the cell membrane.

It helps support each part of the plant.
  12. What is a genus?
A group of closely related living things.
  13. What is a species?
A group of similar organisms that can mate and produce.
  14. How do scientist identify, compare ans study organism?
    Scientists use a classification system:

    • How many cells does it have?
    • Where does it live?
    • How does it get food?
  15. What is a kingdom?
    It the largest classification group.
  16. How many kingdoms do scientist classify organisms into?
    • Six kingdoms;
    • - Ancient Bacteria
    • - True Bacteria
    • - Protists
    • - Fungi
    • - Plants
    • - Animals
  17. Ancient Bacteria
    - have only one cell

    - do not have a separate nucleus

    - live on land or in water

    - make their own food
  18. True Bacteria
    - have one cell with no separate nucleus

    - live on land or in water

    - some make their own food
  19. Protists (Algae)
    - have a nucleus

    - other cell parts

    - live in water and damp places

    - some make their own food
  20. Fungi (Mushrooms)
    - mostly made of many cells

    - each cell has a nucleus and other cell parts

    - live on land

    - get food from other living or nonliving things
  21. Plants
    - made of many cells

    - each cell has a nucleus and a cell wall

    - most live on land

    - use the Sun's enerygy to make their own food
  22. Animals
    - made of many cells

    - live on land or in water

    - eat plants or other animals
