    refers to the confidence we have that the results of a study accurately depict wheter one variable is or is not a cause of another-- to the extent that the preceeding three criteria for inferring causality are met, a study has internal validity

    can generalize the findings of a study to settings and populations beyond the study conditions
  11. The requirements for inferring causality
    • 1) The cause precedes the effect in time
    • ---e.g. family member with schizo - lower socioeconomic status (see what the ses was at certain times, then see when this family was ses before dx w/schizo - time order and sequential)
    • 2) The 2 variables must be empirically correlatied with one another (must be a demonstratable relationship)
    • 3) The observed empirical correlations between the variables can't be explained away as being due to the influence of a third variable that cuases both (non-spuriousness)
    • ---e.g. knee aches before it rains (both caused by change in relative humidity)

    1) History: during the course of the research extraneous eventsmay occur that will confound the results. Something that coincides in time with the independent variable

    2) maturation/passage of time: people are continually growing and changing, whether part of the research or not, and those changes could affect the results of the research. e.g. people going through crisis improve w/or w/o treatment, by the passage of time

    3) testing: occurs when the process of testing itself enhances the performance on a later version of the test without any corresponding improvement on the construct the test is trying to measure

    5) statistical regression: with repeated testing on almost any assessment scores will fluctuate from one time to the next; especially so if we chose persons on the basis of extreme scores - either very high or very low - subsequent scores will regress (move back) towards the mean of the distribution of scores, we could show "improvement" simply based on the regression and not bc of the effect of any intervention

    • Main source is historical records/data, not just limited to communications, also comparing social processes (theoretical structures) over time to gain an understanding
    • Important differences between primary and secondary data sources: can always be biased in some way; often depending on why the documents were created and how they were used in the period created
    • Need for triangulation, collect historical data from several sources and see where the truth is
