plants are sensitive to
light
gravity
moisture
they respond by parts of the plant growing towards or away from them
these slow growth responses are calles tropisms
shoots grow ..... the light . this type of response is called ........ and because it is ...... the light the shoot is described as ....... .......
towards
phototropism
towrdas
positively phototropic
roots grow .... gravity . this type of response is called g....... and because it is ..... gravity is is described as ....... .....
towards
geotropism
towards
positively
geotropic
shoots grow ... from gravity . this type of repsonse is described as ...... ....
away
negatively geotropic
roots grow ..... water . this type of repsonse is called ......... and because it grows ..... water the root is described as ....... .......
towards
hydrotropism
towards
positively hydrotropic
planst produce hormones called
auxins
in shoots and roots it is the .... which produces auxin and causes :
the cells to elongate and grow
if a shoot only gets light from one side ,
most of the auxin will collect on the shaded side
the auxin makes the shoot grow faster on the shaded side
the shoot will bend towards light
if a plant is put on its side the auxin
builds up on the lower side of the shoot and root
in the shoot the auxin causes the lower side to grow faster
causing the shoot to grow upwards
in the root the auxin causes the lower side to grow slower
so the upper surface grows faster this causes the root to bend downwards
