Atropine

    Parasympatholytic / Anticholinergic
  2. Pharmacology and Actions
    Atropine blocks the parasympathetic nervous system, specifically the vagal effects on the heart. It does not increase contractility but my increase myocardial oxygen demand. Decreases airway secretions.
  3. Indications
    • Hemodynamically Significant Bradycardia
    • Baradyasystolic Arrest
    • organophosphate Poisoning
  4. Contraindications
    None in the setting emergency
  5. Precautions and Side Effects
    • Headaches / Dizziness
    • ALOC
    • Weakness
    • Hypertension / Hypotension
    • A Fib / V Fib
    • Doubles the size of the MI
  6. Dosage (adult)
    • Bradycardia
    • - 0.5mg IVP / IO (may repeat as needed every 3-5 min)
    • Max dose 3.0mg IVP / IO

    PEDI 0.02mg/kg IV / IO

    • Asystole / PEA (Below 60 BPM)
    • - 1mg IVP / IO (may repeat as needed every 3-5 min)
    • Max dose 3.0mg IVP / IO (2mg ET)

    PEDI 0.02mg/kg IV / IO (if vagal induce)

    • Organophosphate Poisoning
    • - 2-5mg IV / IO / IM (may repeat as needed every 10-15 min)

    PEDI 0.05mg/kg IV / IO / IM
