the idea that comunication consists of transmission of messages through symbols that must be properly encoded and decoded to convey the intended meaning

pass judgement, express agreement or disagrement, or other advice

challenge the other person to clarify the message adn id points of inconsistency or contradiction

diverting responses
change the focus of the communicators problem to a problem selected by the responder

probing responses
ask the communicator to clarify what was said or to provide additional information or illustration.

pacifying response
reduce the intensity of emotion associated with the mesage and help to calm the communicator. No need to think we're trying to take advantage, the delay is out of our control.

reflective or reinterpretive response
reflect back to the communicator what was hear in different words.
