P2. Thermal Physics

  1. Arrangement of particles
    • Solid: Tightly packed, even rows and columns
    • Liquid: Loosely arranged, flowing over each other
    • Gas: Widely spaced, some collisions
  2. Motion of particles
    • Solid: Vibrate in fixed position
    • Liquid: Move past each other and vibrate
    • Gas: Random movement (straight lines), some collisions
  3. Forces between particles
    • Solid: Very strong bonds
    • Liquid: Some weak bonds
    • Gas: No bonds except during collision
  4. Absolute zero
    • Matter cannot be cooled more
    • As less energy as element gets
  5. Evaporation
Particles at top of liquid have more energy to become gas

    • Larger surface area
    • More moving air on surface (wind)
    • Greater exposed surface area
  6. Pressure-volume graphs
    • Image Upload 2
    • As volume increases, pressure decreases

    • Image Upload 4
    • 1/volume provides a linear graph through the origin with pressure.
  7. Pressure-volume equation
    P1V1=P2V2
