4 Congenital Heart Defects
Ventricular Septal Defect (VSD)
: increased PA blood flow
Coarctation of Aorta
: obstructive defect
Tetralogy of Fallot (TOF)
: decreased PA blood flow
Transposition of the Great Vessels
: mixed blood flow
Ventricular Septal Defect (VSD)
INCREASED PULMONARY ARTERY BLOOD FLOW
most common abnormal opening between ventricles
blood flows from left to right side of the heart most of the time
acyanotic (L-R)
cyanotic (R-L)
Clinical Manifestation of VSD
failure to thrive
diaphoresis
fatigue
more susceptible to pulmonary infection (increased coronary blood flow; stasis of fluids)
systolic murmur (not that strong)
petite
difficulty eating
Coarctation of Aorta
OBSTRUCTIVE DEFECT
can lead to left side heart failure (pump to hard -> hypertrophy)
Classic Symptoms of Coarctation of Aorta
different B/P or pulses (increased B/P on UE than LE)
possible systolic murmur
Tetralogy of Fallot (TOF)
DECREASED PULMONARY ARTERY FLOW
four parts
blood flow from right to left depends on any of the four parts
check femoral/pedal on babies -> won't feel them if this occurs
4 Parts of Tetralogy of Fallot
VSD (occurs as a result of increased pressure fro pulmonary stenosis)
Pulmonary Stenosis (affects right ventricle size the most)
Right Ventricular Hypertrophy
Overriding Aorta (aorta moves towards the right side; giving deoxygenated blood)
Clinical Symptoms of TOF
tet spells (cyanotic spells)
cyanosis at rest
slow weight gain
inability to tolerate activity
possible murmur
Transposition of the Great Vessels
MIXED BLOOD FLOW DEFECT
no flow between system and pulmonic circulation
Clinical Symptoms of Tranposition of the Great Vessels
cyanosis and sever respiratory depression (will be evident quickly after birth; 10-14 days)
no murmur
needs PDA to occur if no surgery
