  1. What is the lymphatic system?

    Where is it distributed?
    It is a collection of cells, tissues, and organs.

    Distributed throughout the body.
  2. What are the functions of the Lymphatic System? (3)

    How do leukocytes fight infection?

    What are lymph nodes?
    • 1. Provide defense, DIAPEDESIS = "through" + "walking"due to CHEMOTAXIS.
    • ~Leukocytes squeeze out of capillaries -> into interstitial space -> into lymph fluid –fight infection or into lymph system

    Recirculation (return of extracellular fluid to the circulatory system)

    2) Regulate fluid balance - return fluid to circulatorysystem.


    3) Transport nutrients, waste, & hormones into circulatory system (absorbs fat from digestion).

    Lymph nodes: "filtering" organs.
  3. Recirculation.

    Are T-lymphocytes and B-cells, which are visitors or residents?

    What do B-cells produce?
    T-lymphocytes are visitors!

    B-cells are residents which produce ANTIOBODIES.
  4. What is the net increase in the interstitial fluid in the circulatory system?

    What fluid do Lymph capillaries absorb?

    Where are lymph fluid and cells transported to re-enter the circulatory system?
    Net increase is 3 L/day.

    Lymph caps absorb interstitial fluid in the interstitial space.

    Transport through the lymph vessels to re-enter the circulatory system.
  5. What are the 3 types of Lymph cells?

    Which of the 3 aka, residents cells?

    Which are known as travel cells?
    • 1) B-cells (plasma cells) are RESIDENTS.
    • 2) T-cells TRAVEL.
    • 3) Macrophaes
  6. Lymph tissues.

    Where are B-cells formed from?

    What is MALT? (define; also extension, GALT, BALT).

    Are tonsils glands?
    B-cells forming nodules from germinal centers

    Mucosa Associated Lymph Tissues (MALT) = tonsils

    • (MALT) “Aggregated lymph tissue” and nodules (not encapsulated).
    • (i) Gut Associated Lymph Tissue (GALT)
    • (ii) Bronchiole Asociated Lymph Tissue (BALT)
    • -Found in ALL lymph organs.

    Tonsils are NOT glands.
  7. Lymphatic Organs.

    Characterized by what type of tissue? (capsule or no?)

    Are these glands?
    1) Characterized by Dense C.T

    Capsule

    NOT glands.
  8. Lymphatic organs are divided into what 2 groups?

    What does each organ contain? (2 each)
    • I) Primary or Central lymphoid organs
    • a) Bone marrow
    • b) Thymus

    • II) Secondary or Peripheral lymphoid organs - lymphocyte respond site
    • a) Spleen - single, large, filters blood.
    • b) Lymph nodes - filter lymph (filtering organs)
