Why are viruses considered non- living?
They are considered non- living because they can only reproduce when they invade a host cell
Be able to identify the three shaped viruses.
Bacteriophage
Polyhedron
Rod
Diagram the structure of a virus and label.
1. Enzyme
2. Cell Membrane
3. Capsid
What is a retrovirus?
Retroviruses are RNA viruses
What is the order of the lytic life cycle?
1. Attachment to cell
2. Penetration
3. Synthesis of protein- transcription, translation, and then make viral proteins.
4. Assembly of the virus
5. Release from the host cell either by- lysis (fever blisters) or budding (HIV)
6. Virions- newly released viruses existing outside the cell ready to invade other cells
What is the difference between lyric and lysogenic life cycle?
In the lysogenic life cycle the virus attached to host chromosomes and gets duplicated every time the host cell divided.
How do viruses harm cells?
Viruses cause cell and tissue destruction. Some viruses trigger cancer. They destroy cell function
Why are anti- virus drugs difficult to develop?
Anti- virus drugs are difficult because viral proteins mutate rapidly. The virus is located inside the cell
