Furosemide (Lasix)

    Diuretic
  2. Description
    Potent diuretic that inhibits sodium and chloride reabsorption in the kidneys and causes venous dilation
  3. Mechanism of Action
    Loop diuretic that inhibits sodium and chloride reabsorption in kidneys causes venous dilation within 5 minutes. Causes a reduction of preload, decreasing cardiac workload. The 2nd effect is diuresis
  4. Onset of Action
    • Onset: 5-10 min (vasodilation) ; 5-30 min (diuresis)
    • Peak: 30 min (vasodilation) ; 20-60 min (diuresis)
    • Duration: 2 hours (vasodilation) ; 6 hours (diuresis)
    • Half-life: 30 min
  5. Indications
    Adjunct to Nitroglycerin and ACE inhibitors for CHF and pulmonary edema
  6. Contraindications
    • Usage in pregnancy is to be limited to life-threatening situations can cause fetal abnormities.
    • Sulfa Allergy
  7. Precautions
    • Dehydration
    • electrolyte depletion
    • hypotension from excessive doses of diuretics
    • Monitor BP
    • Inocor and Lasix can cause precipitation in IV line
    • Lasix with other diuretics can cause severe volume depletion and electrolyte imbalance.
    • Rapid administration can cause certain pts to go deaf

    • Hypotension
    • Nausea
    • Dysrhythmias
    • Vomiting
    • Volume depletion
    • Diarrhea
    • Potassium depletion
    • Headache
    • Dizziness
  9. Adult Dose
    • Pts taking Lasix at home: 40mg SIVP
    • Pts not taking Lasix at home: 20mg SIVP
    • In severe cases 80-120mg
  10. Pedi Dose
    0.5–2.0mg/kg
