Hess's Law

  1. What does Hess's law state?
    That the enthalpy change for a reaction is independent of the route taken
  2. Propane formation can be represented by the following equation
    3C + 4H2→ C3H8
    Calculate the enthalpy change for the reaction using the enthalpies of combustion of carbon, hydrogen and propane given in the SQA data booklet.
    ΔH= -106 kJ mol-1
  3. Ethyne can be converted to ethane by reaction with hydrogen.
    C2H2 + 2H2 → C2H6
    Calculate the enthalpy change for the reaction using the enthalpies of combustion of ethyne, hydrogen and ethane given in the SQA data book
    ΔH= -312 kJ mol-1
