Description
A salt that provides bicarb to buffer metabolic acidosis which can accompany several disease processes. (DKA or renal failure)

Combines w/ excessive acids to form a weak volatile acid, increases pH

Rarely used Pre-hospital
Not recommended in Cardiac Arrest unless caused by DKA or Renal failure
Used in TCA overdose
Contraindications
NONE treat only indications :)
Precautions
Cause metabolic alkalosis in large quantities
Dont use in same IV line as calcium chloride
Side Effects
NONE for pre hospital use
Adult Dose
1mEq/kg followed by 0.5mEq/kg every 10min IV Bolus
Pedi Dose
Same as Adult
1mEq/kg followed by 0.5mEq/kg every 10min IV Bolus
Max Dose
1 pre-hospital dose
