  1. What are the three divisions of the ANS?
    • Sympathetic division

    Thoracic and superior lumbar segments of the spinal cord.

    Extensive network of neurons and nerve networks within walls of the digestive tract. It is influenced by both the sympathetic and parasympathetic divisions.
  7. Describe the length of both pre and post ganglionic fibers.
    Preganglionic fibers are relatively short and postganglionic fibers are relatively long.
  8. What are the three sympathetic divisions?
    • Sympathetic Chain
    • Collateral Ganglia
    • Adrenal Medulla
  9. What is the function of the sympathetic division?
    It prepares the body for a hightened levels of somatic activity.
  10. What are the typical responses of the sympathetic division?
    • Heightened mental alertness
    • Increased metabolic rate
    • Reduced digestive and urinary functions
    • Activation of energy reserves
    • Incresed respiratory rate and blood pressure
    • Activation of swear glands
  11. What are the two ganglia of the parasympathetic division?
    • Terminal ganglia
    • Intramural ganglia
  12. Describe the function of the parasympathetic division.
    It is concerned with regulation of visceral function and energy conservation.
  13. What are the typical responses of the parasympathetic division?
    • Decreased metabolic rate
    • Decreased heart rate and blood pressure
    • Increased salivary and digestive gland secretion
    • Increased digestive tract motility and blood flow
    • Stimulation of urination and defication
  14. What are splanchnic nerves?
    Preganglionic fibers passing to collateral ganglia.
  15. Whar are sympathetic nerves?
    Postganglionic fibers innervating thoracic cavity structures which form bundles.
