Study Guide - Chapter 14

  1. What system do yellow light, ultraviolet waves and x-rays pertain to?
They are part of the electromagnetic system.
  2. What happens to light when it passes through a concave lens?
    The light spreads apart.
  3. What is the iris?
It is the muscular part of the eye that controls how much light enters the eye.
  4. What is a translucent?
It is the type of material used to make stained glass windows.
  5. What is the cochlea?
It is the part of the ear that is filled with liquid that vibrates causing little hairs to move.
  6. When does light retract?
Light retracts when it moves from one medium to another.
  7. How are light waves and sound waves familiar?
    They both carry energy.
  8. On a musical instrument, if one string vibrates more quickly than the other, what does that mean?
On could say that it will have a high pitch.
  9. If a person is travelling in complete silence, where are they travelling?
    They are in outer space.
  10. What type of a wave is a sound wave?
    It is a longitudinal wave.
  11. What energy forms by vibrating objects?
    Sound energy is formed.
  12. How do wind instruments produce sound?
Wind instruments produce sound when the person blows air across a hole causing the particles in a column of air to vibrate.
  13. Why do shorter instruments have higher pitches?
Shorter instruments have higher pitches because they have a shorter column of air.
  14. What are two important souces of light to life and on Earth?
    The Sun and Fire.
  15. What is the Sun?
It is a source of light that warms Earth and allows plants to make their own food.
  16. What is fire?
Fire is also a source, and it provides people with warmth, light and a way to cook food.
  17. What is the speed of sound through different mediums?
From fastest to slowest, sound waves travel through the flowing materials, in this order:

    • - Wooden Block
    • - Pond Water
    • - Cold Air
  18. Explain why sound travels through different mediums at different speeds.
    • - When sound travels, it compresses the particles in the medium (material).
    • - The speed will depend on how close the particles in the medium are to one another.
    • - In solids, particles are crowded together allowing sound to travel quickly.
    • -In liquid, particles are further apart, so sound travels slower.
    • - Gas is where particles are the further apart, so sound travels slowest through air.
