COMBINING FORM
- Created when a ROOT is combined with a COMBINING VOWEL
- Color, Body part, thoughts, ideas
- Root gives the same information as the combining form
- All medical term root has a combining form.
- DENOTED BY: /followed by the combining vowel
- EX.: Arthr/o= Joint

ROOT
- Found at the beginning of the medical term
- Foundation of the medical term. Typically has at least one root
- Terms can have one or more roots
- Telling us the body parts involved and main thought

SUFFIXES
- Says if it's a procedure, condition or neither
- Found at the end of the term
- Each term must end with a suffix (one suffix per term, except for the instances when the rott can stan alone as a word)
- DENOTED BY: hyphen before the suffix
- EX.: -ac, -al, -ar, -ary = pertaining to; like

PREFIXES
- Beginning of the term when present
- Not all terms have a prefix
- Number, Location, direction
- DENOTED BY: Hyphen after the prefix
- EX.: Ante-= Before; forward

RULES FOR COMBINING ROOTS, PREFIXES & SUFFIXES
- 1. When combining more than one root in a medical term, the combining for of the root is usually used between the roots
- ex. Cardiogastric => Pertaining to ther heart and stomach
- The combining form Cardi/o is used to join the roots cardi and gastr.
- 2. When combining a root with a suffix that begins with a consonant, the combining form of the root must be used to connect the suffix
- ex. Gastromegaly
- 3. When combining a root with a suffix that begins with a vowel, the combining form is not used.
- Ex. Gastrectomy
- 4. There will always be some exceptions to these rules
- Ex. Gastroenterology
