-
Olfactory (I)
- Sensory: Carries smell impulses from nasal mucous membrane to brain
- Test: Smell impulse of coffee
-
Optic (II)
- Sensory: Carries visual impluses from eye to brain
- Test: Visual Acuity check, Snellen Chart
-
Oculomotor (III)
- Motor: Contracts eye muscles to control eye movements (interior lateral, medial, and superior), constricts pupils, and elevates eyelidsids
- Test: Cornea Light Reflex
-
Trochlear (IV)
- Motor: Contracts one eye muscle to control inferomedial eye movement
- Test: Convergence
-
Trigeminal (V)
- Motor: Carries sensory impulses of pain, touch, and temperature from the face to the brain
- Sensory: Influences clenching and lateral jaw movements (biting, chewing)
- Test: Pricking areas (forehead, cheek, and jaw) with sharp and dull edges.
-
Abducens (VI)
- Motor: Control lateral eye movement
- Test: Gazing
-
Facial (VII)
- Sensory: Contains sensory fibers for taste on anterior two thirds of tongue and stimulates secretions from salivaryglands (submaxillary and sublingual) and tears from lacrimal glands
- Motor: Supplies the facial muscles and affects facial expressions (smiling, frowning, closing eyes)
- Test: puffing of cheeks, wrinkling forehead, and clenching teeth
-
Acoustic (VIII)
- Sensory: Contains sensory fibers for hearing and balance
- Test: Hearing based on conversation
-
Glossopharyngeal (IX)
- Sensory: Contains sensory fibers for taste on posterior third of tongue and sensory fibers of the pharynx that result in the “gag reflex” when stimulated
- Motor: Provides secretory fibers to the parotid salivary glands; promotes swallowing movements
- Test: ahhh or gag reflex
-
Vagus (X)
- Sensory: Carries sensations from the throat, larynx, heart, lungs, bronchi, gastrointestinal tract, and abdominal viscera
- Motor: Promotes swallowing, talking, and production of digestive juices
- Test: ahhh or gag reflex
-
Accessory (XI)
- Motor: Innervates neck muscles (sternocleidomastoid and trapezius) that promote movement of the shoulders andhead rotation. Also promotes some movement of the larynx
- Test: Shrug Shoulder
-
Hypoglossal (XII)
- Motor: Innervates tongue muscles that promote the movement of food and talking
- Test: Sticking out tongue
