  1. Define Legg-Calve-Perthes disease:
    A hip disorder in children due to interruption of the blood supply to the head of the femur.

    Most common at age 6-9, more severe in girls.
  2. Define Osteoarthritis:
    Form of arthritis marked by chronic cartilage deterioration in synovial joints & vertebrae.

    Common in middle aged people.
  3. Define rheumatoid arthritis:
    Chronic autoimmune disease that causes inflammation and deformity of the joints.

    Common in women.
  4. Define osteogenic sarcoma:
    Malignant bone tumor; most common in children and young adults where it tends to affect the femur or long end of bones.

    Common in the 10-25 age group.
  5. Define osteoporosis:
    Loss of bone density.

    Most common in post-menopausal women.
  6. Define Osgood-Schlatter disease:
    Irritation of the patellar tendon at the tibial tuberosity.

    Commonly affects active young people, particularly boys between the ages of 10 and 15.
  7. Define ankylosing spondylitis:
    Inflammation or fusing of the joints in the spine.

    Most common in males 30 years old and older.
  8. Define Paget's disease:
    Chronic disease of bone that fractures easily.

    Rarely diagnosed in people under 40. Men and women are affected equally.
  9. Define osteogenesis imperfecta:
    Brittle bone disease.

    Affects equal numbers of males and females.
  10. Define multiple myeloma:
    Cancer of the plasma cells in bone marrow.
