  3. Stages of migraine
    • -Prodrome: specific symptoms: food cravings, mood changes
    • -Aura Phase: visual changes, flashes, diplopia
    • -Headache: few hours to few days
    • -Termination: intensity decreases
    • -Postdrome: fatigued, irritable, muscle pain
  4. Interventions:
    3 R's
    Priority
    • 3 R's: recognize, respond, relieve
    • Priority is pain management
  5. Abortive therapy
    • -alleviate pain during aura phase
    • -mild migraine meds:
    • -acetaminophen (Tylenol)
    • -NSAID's (Motrin)
    • -naproxen
    • -OTC's with migraine on label
  6. Abortive therapy: Severe migraines
    • Triptan, Zomig, Imitrex
    • -take at 1st symptoms
    • -report angina & tightness promptly
    • -use contraceptives
    • -don't take with SSRI's
    • Ergotamine
    • -take at start of headache
  7. Preventive therapy
    • Propanolol
    • Inderol
    • Topamax
    • Avoid Triggers
  8. Alternative therapy
    • -Accupressure/accupuncture
    • -herbs
    • -avoid triggers
