  5. Computer
An electronic device that accepts data (raw facts) as input, processes, or alters them in some way and produces useful information as output.
  6. Program
A computer manipulates data by following step-by-step instructions.
  7. Input Devices
    take data that humans understand and digitize those data, that is, translate them into binary forms of ones and zeroes, ones and offs that the computer processes;
  8. Processing Unit
manipulates data; output devices produce information that people understand; memory and secondary storage devices
  9. Secondary Storage Devices
    hold information, data, and programs.
  10. PDA's
    Persongal Digital Assitants
  11. Personal Digital Assistants (PDAs)
    Small handheld computers
  12. Mainframes
used for business input/output such as paychecks or processing medical insurance claims.
  13. Miniframes
are scaled down mainframes; they are multiuser computers that are used by small businesses.
  14. Microcomputers
(Personal Computer) are powerful enough for an individuals needs in world processing, spreadsheets, and database management.
  15. Embedded Computer
is a single-purpose computer on a chip of silicon, which is embedded in anything from appliances to humans. An embedded computer may help run your car, microwave, pacemaker, or watch
  16. Hardware
    Physical components of a computer
  17. Binary Digits (bits)
Inside the computer, all data are represented by the binary ditis (bits) 1 (one) and 0 (zero). To translate 1s and 0s is to digitize.
  18. Digitize
To translate 1s and 0s is to digitize.
  19. Input devices
    Keyboards and direct-entry devices
  20. Direct entry devices
include pointing devices, scanning devices, smart and optical cards, speech and vision input, touch sensors, and human biology input devices.
  21. Mouse
You can use to position the insertion point on the screen, or make a choice from a menu. Other variations are: Light pens, digitizing tablets, and pen-based systerms.
  22. Scanning devices
Digitize data by shining a light on an image and measuring the reflection.
  23. RFID
    Radio Frequency Indentification tags
  24. Radio frequency indentification (RFID) tags
input devices are not used to indentify anything from the family dog to the sponge the surgeon left in your body by sending out radio waves.
  25. Sensors
A sensor is a device that collects data directly from the environment and sends those data to a computer.
  26. Biometrics
Indentify people by their body parts. Biometrics include fingerpritns, hand prints, face recognition and iris scans.
  27. CPU
has two parts- arithetic-logic unit, which performs arithemtic operations and logical operations of computer and the control unit, which directs the operation of the computer in accordance with the programs instructions.
  28. RAM
    Random-Access Memory
  29. Random Access Memory (RAM)
The part of the momory where current work is termporarily stored during processing
  30. ROM
    Read Only Memory
  31. Read Only Memory (ROM)
Or fireware is contains basic start up instructions, which are burned into a chip at the factory; you can not change the contents of the ROM
  32. Open Architecture
    allows you to add devices
  33. Expansion Slots
into which you can plug expansion boards for additional hardware
  34. Ports
board has sockets on the outside
  35. Expansion Boards
use of virtual reality simulators which help in teaching certain produres.
  36. Output devices
translate language of bits into a form humans can understand. Output devices are in two categories; those that produce hard copy including printers and plotters and those that produce soft (digital) copy, including monitors, speakers.
  37. Magnetic Disk
store data and programs as magnetic spots or electromagnetic charges.
  38. CDs
    Compact Disks
  39. Compact Disks (CDs)
store data as pits and lands burned into a plastic disk.
  40. Solid-state memory devices
flash memory cards used in notebooks, memory sticks and very compact key chair devices. USB flash drives have a huge capacity for information.
  41. Software
step by step instructions that tell the hardware what to do.
  42. System software
consists of programs that let a computer manage it's resources.
  43. Operating System
is a group of programs that manage and organize resources of the computer.
  44. User interface
user communciates with the computer for example, windows provides graphich user interfact, pictures or icons that you click on with a mouse.
  45. Application software
allows you to apply computer technology to a task you need done.
  46. Word processing software
allows you to enter text for a paper, report, letter or memo
