  1. Biometrics
    the science that measures body characteristics; enables security devices to indentify a user by these characteristics
  2. Clinical information systems (CIS)
    uses computers to manage clinical information
  3. Computer information systems
    used in some hospitals and other health care facilities to help mage and organize relevant patient, financial, pharmacy, laboratory, and radiological information
  4. encryption
    used to protect information from unauthroized users; involves encoding of messages
  5. e-prescribing
    the use of compouters and software to enter prescriptions and send them to pharmacies electronically
  6. financial information systems (FIS)
    is concerned with the financial details of running a hospital
  7. hospital information systems (HIS)
    attemps to integrate the administractive and clinical functions in a hospital. Ideally, the HIS includes clincial information systems, financial information systems, laboratory information systems, nursing, and pharmacy information systerms, and piture archiving and comuication systems and radiology information systerms.
  8. iHealth Record
    a personal medical record that the patient can create and maintain at no cost. It is available at some doctors' offices
  9. International Classification of Disease (ICD) codes
    codes 1000 diseases
  10. Interoperablitity
    the connection of people and diverse computer systems
  11. laboratory information systems (LIS)
    use computers to manage both laboratory ests and their results
  12. medical informatics
    the use of computers and computer technology in health care and it's delivery
  13. national health information network (NHIN)
    the infrastructure that would allow communictions between RHIOs
  14. nursing information systems (NIS)
    are supposed to improve nursing care by using computers to mage charting, staff scheduling, and the intergration of clincial information
  15. picture archiving and communications systems (PACS)
    manage digital images. Gitial images are immediately available on the monitor and can be shared over a network.
  16. pharmacy information systems (PIS)
    monitor durg allergies and interactions and fille and track prescriptions. they also track inventory and creat patient drug profiles
  17. radiology information systems (RIS)
    manage patients in the radiology department including scheduling appointments, tracking film, and reporting results.
  18. Regional health information organizations (RHIOs)
    Regional cooperation is being fostered through the establishment of regional health information organizations (RHIOs) in which data could be shared within a region
