    party against whom a lawsuit is brought and from whom recovery is sought
  3. stare decisis
    practice of relying on previous decisions in which similiar disputes arose
  4. common law
    body of recorded decisions that courts refer to and rely upon when making later legal decisions
  5. precedent
    model case that a court can follow when facing a similiar situation
  6. case law
    efects of court decisions that involve the same or similiar facts
  7. statuatory law
    field of law involving statues
  8. ordinance
    law that is passed by a local government, such as a city council
  9. administrative law
    body of rules, regulations, and decisions created by administrative agencies
  10. Uniform Commercial Code
    a set of laws that govern various commercial transactions
